What is Thermoplastic Molding?

Thermoplastic molding is almost the opposite of Thermoset Molding. Thermoplastic molding typically requires a “hot” material and a “cold” mold.

Material for the part is fed into a heated barrel, plasticized using a helical screw, and injected under pressure into a mold cavity via gate and runner system. There it then “cures” to the shape of the mold detail.

thermoplastic polymer

Thermoplastic molding material is similar to water and an ice cube. It can be typically reground and reused or recycled, just like an ice cube can be melted and refrozen.

Quick Production

Because of its extremely high production output, thermoplastic molding is one of the fastest methods of plastic manufacturing.

Cost Effective

Due to the high production output rate, it is an efficient and cost-effective form of manufacturing.

Reduced Waste

Due to the composition of these plastics, they can be remolded or recycled.

Surface Finish

The molding process allows for many surface finish options on the parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Thermoplastics are plastics made of polymer resins that soften when heated and harden when cooled.
Because the manufacturing method can create almost any shape, the applications for this process vary from automotive parts to children's toys.
Polyester, nylon, acrylic, polystyrene, polypropylene, and Teflon are the most common and widely used thermoplastics.
